Through Her Lens: The Impact of COVID-19 on Filipino Girls and Young Women

Plan International Philippines, an independent development and humanitarian organization working alongside children, young people, our supporters and partners, acknowledges that girls and young women in humanitarian contexts are known to face exacerbated and differing risks, including exploitation and abuse. In recognition of the risks faced by girls, women, and diverse populations in these contexts, the organization conducted a study during the implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in the Philippines, from April 20 to May 15, 2020 to gather the perception of girls and young women aged 13 – 24 years old on the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic to their lives.

Using an online survey, girls and young women from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao provided information on their perception of the effects of COVID-19 on their environment, health, education, and economic opportunities. Data on areas such as child protection, gender-based violence, risk communication, decision-making, and leadership were also collected. The results of the survey were then processed, organized, and analyzed to draw insights into these areas and to present recommendations from girls and young women themselves.

Following this and as part of the International Day of the Girl, as well as International Day for Disaster Reduction and ASEAN Day for Disaster Management (IDDR-ADDM) Celebration, Plan International Philippines will be launching the aforementioned research entitled as “Through Her Lens: The Impact of COVID-19 on Filipino Girls and Young Women”.

The launch will showcase the insights of girls and young women on the impact of the pandemic to their lives, as well as highlight the recommendations given by the respondents to various institutions.
